The cloud and digital transformation are often seen as the stellar twins of today’s business universe. And, like twins, they learn from one another. For example, cloud first appeared as an IT problem quick-fix. Have a lot of not-very-valuable data and nowhere to store it? Put it in the cloud. Got a load of compute-hungry, low-level apps and running out of space? The cloud’s the thing for them too.
Cloud’s evolution
Those early mindsets have changed now. Over the last few years cloud computing technology has grown and matured, providing strong foundations for digital transformation initiatives. For instance, a business can’t operate effectively when the app is in one place and the user is half a world away. That led to cloud edge technology, placing processing power closer to where it’s needed, complemented by sophisticated communications networks. Shared operating systems in virtual environments slow down response times. So, containerisation came about, to speed applications development lead times. Compliance issues may arise if data has to live in a multi-tenanted environment because regulatory bodies want certain data to be stored separately. Private clouds thus entered the fray, enabling hybrid multi-cloud architectures for sectors like financial services to engage in new ways with digitally-savvy, always-connected customers.

The next phase of growth for cloud – and enterprises
Now, to extend my metaphor, an extra-exuberant baby brother has joined the twins: DevOps. As the role of IT in propelling business success grows, more software investment becomes inevitable. One need only look at today’s hunger for APIs – and the eagerness of suppliers to offer them – to see the truth in that. DevOps in the cloud will see organisations experimenting like never before, taking digital transformation to new heights. I see that as an everyone-wins scenario and, at Tata Communications, we understand and enable such shifts. We also know keeping the business protected against growing cyberthreats is crucial to the success of new digital services.
Overleaf, in our hybrid multi-cloud portfolio for digital transformation you’ll find private cloud technology rubbing shoulders with enterprise-grade storage, while container-as-a-service meets big data. That frees businesses to innovate. Take Khimji Ramdas case study for example. Looking to gain business agility while balancing corporate risk, it took a bold leap into the cloud. Or what about Auto & General case study. Aiming to open new businesses in Singapore and Thailand, IZO™ Private Cloud provided the enabling platform. Outstanding success stories like these populate the pages of this book, showing how customers worldwide use our digital technology to drive growth and transform the way they operate and engage with their customers.

Setting the stage for modern business intelligence
SAP HANA allows enterprises across industries to process all their transactions, make the data instantly available, and run analytic processing in real-time through a single in-memory system — helping them to improve business performance, expedite service delivery, and operate effciently.
Migration to SAP HANA comes with challenges too: expensive infrastructure requirements, specialist deployment and management skills, ensuring 24*7 availability of hosting infrastructure, and the need for an integrated IT environment i.e. network, security etc.
What’s more, SAP has set a 2025 deadline for all its ERP customers to migrate to SAP HANA. The clock is ticking.
While business of all sizes are embracing SAP HANA, infrastructure requirements for mid-size enterprise varied from large one. To harness process and cost effciencies, and improving time to market — mid-size business prefer easy to deploy standard SAP HANA solutions while large business need custom SAP HANA solution with large vCPU and vRAM configuration.
Ultra-agile infrastructure perfect for devops and microservices
Next-generation application development and DevOps demand a high performance infrastructure that traditional IT or cloud environments may not offer.
Operating over multiple OS, languages, databases and tools can pose challenges in deploying, configuring, and managing IT complexities - becoming a burden on in-house expertise and systems, as well as on infrastructure and architecture. A new technology simplifies this process.
Critical questions to ensure enterprise-grade container management
- Does security prevent malware in application code?
- What if your container infrastructure goes down?

Key considerations in the cloud migration journey
In recent years, the cloud conversations have changed from “Why Cloud?” to “How Cloud?” and “Which Cloud?” In other words, cloud has become integral to organisations’ IT strategy and is now the new normal for a lot of enterprises. However, making the move is daunting for any organisation. Rather than simply shifting workloads and applications, organisations have to reimagine their IT estate, including their IT operating models, in order to drive innovation, create new opportunities and ensure success.
That’s why the need to understand the full picture is so important before you start to migrate. The strategic levers are key, including business agility, the pace of innovation and your digital infrastructure. You need to look at every single aspect, from the target architecture through to any potential risks, as well as the portability of your applications and what workloads to shift and how. Add to that the need to estimate costs and timelines and draw up a cohesive plan, and the complexities can mount up. In a nutshell, effective migration can unleash the benefits of cloud – and with failsafe planning, you can make the journey simpler to align with your business objectives.
Key challenges in cloud migration
Simplify cloud migration complexities
Tata Communications’ cloud migration framework empowers your enterprise to develop a plan tailored to your organisation. No two cloud journeys are alike, which is why our certified cloud professionals assess your current situation before drawing up a plan, looking at your technology landscape, including:
Once we have all the details, we will develop your tailored migration plan, which will include details of how certain applications will be migrated. We’ll consider aspects like whether they should simply be re-hosted or whether they need to be refactored, repurchased, retired or retained. This depth of analysis will help you in the migration approach and determine the baseline for success. Our cloud migration framework guides your business step by step, enabling you to unlock the full value of cloud today and in the future. With a planned approach to assess, move, operate and innovate on the cloud, your migration will be in safe hands when you choose Tata Communications as your partner.
Implementing and managing public cloud infrastructure can be stressful
Today, global enterprise growth and expansion is largely driven by proven technologies such as the cloud. The need for scalability, agility and faster time to market are driving organisations to invest in both private and multiple public cloud platforms to stay ahead in the marketplace.
According to a recent research conducted by 451 Research, 72% of surveyed enterprises using public cloud indicated they are working in a multi cloud environment with more than one public cloud provider. Incorporating Public cloud into your IT strategy is easier said than done. The need of technology factors like application modernisation, re-platforming and others requires extensive knowledge and expertise for a successful public cloud adoption. One migrated, managing multiple cloud platforms can prove to be stressful as it requires extensive knowledge and expertise. The complexities can increase with the lack of proactive measures and end-to-end SLA-based services. Escalating costs and lack of internal expertise for building unified platforms for cloud and non-cloud solutions can also prove to be major roadblocks.
All these factors combined pose daunting challenges for enterprise CIOs looking to build their digital strategy, impacting time to market. However, choosing the right cloud platform for your business is not easy. Moving workloads to external cloud requires deep understanding of the application landscape, behaviour of the target cloud, and how to integrate different environment together.
of the IT leaders expect to partner with cloud service providers and managed hosting providers for their hybrid and multi cloud initiatives.
Multiple clouds demand a unified management platform
The pandemic has only accelerated the shift to remote, digital-first workforces. And as enterprises seek effective ways to stay connected and keep collaborating, the hybrid multi-cloud offers a compelling way forward – bringing greater control and scalability to drive innovation and avoid costly vendor lock-in.
But with every additional cloud environment comes greater complexity and vulnerability, with visibility compromised and management jeopardised. It’s not easy to implement a seamless hybrid multi-cloud – enterprises need a way to manage it. That means putting a unified management platform in place that can balance agility, scalability, management and security – offering a single portal with 360-degree visibility.

Succinctly summing-up cloud growth, Gartner predicted worldwide public cloud revenues would grow by 23 percent in 2021 to a total of $332.2 billion. A major contributor to that was organisations adopting home working heavily reliant on web-based cloud services. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) has been the most successful by far. It’s forecast to reach $122.6 billion by the end of this year. Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) are both big players, and we’re now seeing new entries like Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS). In percentage terms, DaaS will see the highest growth at 67.7 percent
followed by IaaS at 38.5 percent. Cloud management and security services is showing nearly 30 percent growth from 2020 to 2022. When it comes to Security-as-a-Service, the Gartner forecast highlights the shift toward cloud solutions to run mission-critical security and sensitive IT workloads. Surveys by several researchers point to a common thread: firms are increasingly opting for multi-cloud environments that take advantage of public and private cloud models together with on-prem.
Expected cloud growth factors include:
- 81 percent of organisations have adopted a multi-cloud strategy, while 84 percent describe existing IT as some form of that arrangement.
- Manufacturing ($19.7 billion), professional services ($18.1 billion), and banking ($16.7 billion) are the leading industry verticals in terms of public cloud spending.
